Abstract:
Molecular and morphological data were used to determine the nature of species boundaries among Iberian fishes of the genus Barbus. Different methods (phylogenetic, Bayesian clustering, multivariate) support most taxonomic species and indicate varying levels of gene flow among them. Replicated sampling in a diversity of habitats across the distribution of sympatric species indicates that exogenous (ecological) and endogenous selection determine a dynamic balance between reproductive isolation and gene flow. This study also suggests that homogenization of habitats might lead to reversal of speciation of young species.
